Robotics Head Coach

Program Levels: VEX V5 (Grades 7–12) VEX IQ (Grades 5–6)

Position Summary

The Robotics Head Coach leads student teams through a competitive robotics season using the VEX platform. Coaches foster a student-led environment that encourages critical thinking, teamwork, and experimentation. This role involves mentorship, planning, and collaboration with volunteers to ensure a meaningful and well-organized season.

Program Schedule & Practice Times

Hudsonville Robotics Center Hours: Monday–Thursday, 6:00–8:30 PM during competition season

VEX V5 (Grades 7–12):

  • Teams typically meet two evenings per week
  • Season runs late August to mid-December
  • Teams qualifying for State Finals may continue through February

VEX IQ (Grades 5–6):

  • Teams typically meet one evening per week
  • Season runs mid-October to mid-March
  • Holiday break in December

VEX V5 – Responsibilities

  • Mentor and manage student teams across both middle and high school levels
  • Promote student ownership of robot design, build, programming, and game strategy
  • Organize and lead two weekly evening practices per team
  • Coordinate with volunteer adult coordinators and high school mentors
  • Oversee logistics: registration, engineering notebooks, tournament readiness, and safety
  • Prepare students for league nights and Saturday tournaments
  • Communicate regularly with families and program leadership

VEX IQ – Responsibilities

  • Guide younger students through hands-on exploration of robotics concepts
  • Create a positive, encouraging team environment with room for experimentation and growth
  • Promote teamwork, curiosity, and accountability
  • Lead one weekly evening practice per team
  • Coordinate scrimmages and tournament preparation
  • Communicate with parents and support volunteers throughout the season

Qualifications (All Coaches)

  • At least one year prior robotics coaching experience. 
  • Passion for youth mentorship and student-led learning
  • Strong organization, leadership, and communication skills
  • Familiarity with VEX robotics or willingness to learn (training provided)
  • Availability for evening practices and Saturday events
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population and support volunteers effectively
